The straight skirt is an ideal first sewing project for beginners. With simple straight seams and an elasticated waistband, it’s easy to sew and comfortable to wear, with no fiddly zips or buttonholes. Choose a knee-length or above-the-knee hemline, and add the optional turnover-top patch pockets.

Ready for a little more of a challenge? The flared skirt is cut on the bias for a lovely flowing drape and is best made in a fabric with a softer handle. Choose a knee-length or midi hemline, then finish your skirt with optional turnover-top pockets, belt loops and an elegant sash.

Whether you're sewing your first garment or looking for a satisfying quick make, the Dominique skirt is a useful pattern to return to again and again!

Fabric Suggestions

Straight skirt: Medium-weight woven fabrics, such as cotton, chambray, double gauze, linen, lighter-weight denim and needlecord.

Flared skirt: Light- to medium-weight drapey woven fabrics, such as cotton lawn, chambray, viscose (rayon), lyocell (Tencel) or crêpe de chine. Avoid anything too slippery if you're a beginner.
