Meet Lotta, the easy dress sewing pattern that's perfect for beginners and a satisfying speedy make for more experienced sewists. With its relaxed, blousy bodice, flared skirt and narrow elasticated waist, Lotta is a comfortable everyday dress that's simple to sew and lovely to wear.

Choose a knee-length or midi skirt, then pick your preferred sleeve style: grown-on short sleeves for a simple, casual look or bracelet-length drop-shoulder sleeves for a little extra coverage. Optional deep patch pockets add a practical finishing touch.

One of Lotta's best features is its versatility. You can sew this dress in either woven fabric or stretchy jersey, giving you plenty of scope to experiment with different fabrics and create versions for different seasons.

Wear your handmade Lotta with sandals in summer, or layer it with tights, boots and a cardigan when the weather turns cooler.

Fabric Suggestions

Light- to medium-weight drapey fabrics such as chambray, viscose (rayon), Tencel (lyocell), double gauze, brushed cotton or crêpe. The short
sleeve version can also be made in less drapey fabrics such as linen, cotton lawn, and seersucker.

More experienced? Try single knit drapey jersey, stretch velvet or light-weight French terry.

First dress sewn.

A complete novice and this is the first dress I have every made. The instruction book was good although some things were unclear due to my lack of knowledge.
The videos were brilliant and really helpful. Yes I would recommend this for a beginner. Pleased with the end dress, a few mistakes I admit but have learnt a lot.
Now shall be looking for a new pattern for my next endeavour. Hopefully will find something for a mature lady.

Perfect pattern for a relaxed dress. Super easy to make and wear. Made it in a viscose fabric and will definitely try a knit fabric, too.

Versatile dress

This pattern is easy to put together. The dress can be dressed up for evenings or just a day dress, depending on fabric used. I pair my dress with a wide belt to finish the garment. I used fabric from my stash which was purchased from Seasalt when that company sold fabric. My next dress will be made from Italian cotton.

Versatile dress that is easy for beginners

I used a lightweight cotton and the dress turned out great. I'm not a beginner anymore but I think this would be a straightforward pattern for people early in their sewing journey. I will likely make more in the future.
